Lawn Aerators
Whether it’s sports turf or commercial landscaping, the same rule applies: Healthy grass starts below the surface.
When soil becomes compacted from foot traffic or heavy equipment, turf begins to deteriorate. Aeration relieves compaction by creating small holes in the soil, improving the exchange of air, water, and nutrients. The result? Deeper roots, better drainage, and visibly healthier turf.
Billy Goat offers a complete line-up of high-performance aerators designed to restore soil health, boost lawn resilience, and help you deliver professional results with less effort.

The right machine makes all the difference
Which Aerator fits the job?
Billy Goat offers four main types of aerators, each built for specific tasks, terrains, and turf types:
- Drum aerators (AE401H, AE403V)
Simple, mechanical, and tough. These walk-behind units use a rotating drum and are great for day-in, day-out aeration on standard lawns. - Cam-driven aerators (PL1801H, PL1803V)
Reciprocating tines that drive themselves forward, ideal for tight turns, small spaces, and less turf disruption. - Hydro-drive cam aerators (PL2501SPH, PL2501SPV)
A step up from manual cam-driven units, these models add hydrostatic drive and Variable Aeration Density (VAD™) for flexible hole spacing without sacrificing speed. Great for everyday professional use on varied terrain. - Hydro aerator with VAD™ (AE1300HEU)
A more advanced platform designed for speed and deeper core results. The AE1300HEU features a 76 cm aerating width, VAD™, in-ground turning, and independent FLEXTECH™ arms that go deeper than traditional drums, all powered by fingertip-controlled hydro drive. Ideal for covering large areas fast. - Towable drum aerator (AET48)
High-capacity unit designed for larger properties and open spaces. The modular design allows you to adjust the working width to suit the job, with up to 122 cm coverage for maximum productivity.

FAQ: What Pros Ask
Is it worth investing in a professional aerator?
Absolutely. If you regularly maintain lawns or sports turf, a commercial-grade aerator quickly pays for itself. You can offer aeration as a premium add-on service, improve results for your clients, and stand out from competing landscapers.
How easy are Billy Goat aerators to operate and maintain?
PLUGR® models feature no-lift turning for easier manoeuvring and less strain on the operator. They’re smooth to handle in tight spaces and around obstacles. Maintenance is straightforward, with simplified access to belts and tines, and fewer moving parts compared to traditional drum systems.
The AE401H and AE403V are mechanical drum aerators that offer stable handling and consistent depth across the surface. With no hydraulics or electronics to manage, maintenance is minimal. The belts and components are easy to reach, and the rugged frame holds up to repeated use.
The AE1300HEU combines hydro drive with fingertip controls for smooth, responsive operation over larger areas. It also features Variable Aeration Density (VAD™), which adjusts hole pattern on the move. Access panels make service simple, and the design eliminates the centre drum for fewer wear points.
The AET48 towable units are easy to operate once attached to a tractor or utility vehicle, with manual lift controls and modular widths. With no engine or drive system, maintenance is limited to greasing, tine checks, and occasional hardware replacement.
Can one machine handle different turf types and soil conditions?
Yes! Several Billy Goat aerators support optional tine kits, allowing you to switch between hollow and solid tines. Whether you're dealing with clay-heavy sports turf or soft, irrigated lawns, you can tailor your setup without needing multiple machines.
What’s the difference between cam-driven and drum aerators?
The main difference comes down to how the tines move.
Cam-driven aerators, like the PLUGR® series, use a reciprocating motion to drive tines straight down and lift them back out. This creates clean holes with minimal turf disruption and allows for no-lift turning, making them ideal for jobs that require precision, like high-end residential lawns, sports turf, or repeat service clients. They’re also easier on the operator, especially in tighter spaces or around obstacles.
Drum aerators, like the AE401H and AE403V, use a rotating drum with fixed tines that roll across the surface. They’re more traditional and mechanically simple, which makes them a solid choice for larger, open areas and day-in, day-out commercial use. They may not be as gentle on turf, but they’re tough, dependable, and familiar to most operators.
What’s the difference between a plug (hollow tine) aerator and a spike (solid tine) aerator?
Plug (or hollow tine) aerators remove soil cores, helping to relieve compaction and improve airflow to the root zone. Spike aerators (solid tine) punch into the ground without removing soil. They are faster, but less effective for long-term turf recovery. Several of our Billy Goat aerators can be fitted with optional tine kits, so you can tailor your approach to each job.
What is Variable Aeration Density (VAD™)?
VAD™ is Billy Goat’s proprietary system that lets you control hole density on the go. It’s available on the AE1300HEU and allows you to create 2 to 10 times more holes per pass compared to drum aerators. Perfect for patch repair, overseeding prep, or detailed work where standard spacing won’t cut it. And because it eliminates the need to double-pass, you save serious time on site.
